Weybridge Rowing Club - Junior Section

Imagining the Possibilities with Weybridge Rowing Club in 2017 and Beyond...

Weybridge Rowing Club Junior Section is a lively and vibrant part of the club.  We run a number of courses during the year specifically designed to introduce youngsters to the sport and run an active competition programme.

Our top juniors win at local and national events with a number going on to represent GB internationally.  We pride ourselves at being a very 'intimate' operation where we get to know all members of the squad, and they are keen to attend training, working hard, but enjoying it.

We have an excellent fleet of boats and a professional Head Coach who is ably assisted by a dedicated team of volunteer coaches, many of whom started when their children learned to row at Weybridge, and have stayed on long after their offspring have moved on.

We also have fun when training allows!

Please feel free to contact Clive on clive[at]wrcjnr.com for more information.

Weybridge Rowing Club is sponsored by Weybridge and Walton Physiotherapy, who have two rowers among their physio staff.

I have raised over £250 for the Club by using Easyfundraising when buying stuff I would buy anyway from Amazon, John Lewis and Booking.com among others.    All you do is access the retailer through the donation reminder and Easyfundraising does the rest.  It's free money so please sign up. Please click here to download their donation reminder or click here to get started https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/invite/Y25KAB/   .. Many thanks. Clive

Special note:

Rachel and I have just had a very pleasant meeting with the Chairman and Secretary of the Whitatt's Ait Residents' Association.

We were able to confirm that providing parents collecting their children are in their cars and ready to move upon request they should not be ticketed.  If cars are left unattended outside of the 8 parking spaces, parked on the pavement or grass or otherwise inconsiderately, they WILL be ticketed and neither WARA nor the Club will appeal this.

W/c 16th October

21/10 Saturday -  Silver Sculls has been cancelled due to high winds; this obviously has an effect on what we can do on the water for junior training.  Come down as usual and expect to be flexible as to what we do.  NO 08:00 session.

22/10 Sunday - Junior training

Training as usual ... but windy so be prepared to be flexible in training as everyone will be wanting to do indoor training.  No Judy. No Matt so NO 08:00 session.

W/c 23rd October

24/10 Tuesday - NO Circuits as it's half term.

26/10 Thursday - junior land training (J13/14: 16:30-17:30, J15: 17:30-18:30, J16+ 18:30-20:00).

You MUST be on time, but no more than 10 minutes early as there will be other sessions in progress when you arrive.  Do NOT be late please; session will start promptly and if you are late you may miss out on your session.

If it has been previously agreed with Coaches that you are unable to attend Thursday training, you will be expected to train on ergos at school.  For J13/14 I want you to do 2 x 1500m rate 20/22 pieces with a five minute rest between them.  For J15 this is 2 x 2k rate 22/24 pieces and for J16 it will be 2 x 30 minute pieces at your 5k split.  In all cases please find a small notebook and note the date, what you did, the time taken (or distance rowed), your split and rate.  These pieces may vary.

Check this link for important boat checking information

Please note new requirements for leaving and returning to the pontoon effective immediately:

All boats must spin tight on the Weybridge side of the river and proceed downriver on the Surrey bank.  Do NOT wander across to the Hamhaugh Island side and then go down stream on the wrong side of the river.

When returning to the pontoon ensure you are going upstream on the Hamhaugh Island side when you enter the club stretch and STAY on that side until you get opposite the large moored boat.  Check BEFORE cutting across the river for other river traffic either from the pontoon or coming up or down stream.

It has been positively commented upon how well junior crews, in the main, have taken to this, but SOME STILL NEED TO IMPROVE, please.

Reminder on Clothing :

BOW Person or single sculler MUST WEAR A HI VIZ TOP.   This is an important club rule.

Always bring spare clothes and towel even on Thursdays.  The rule is simple - No change of clothes - No Rowing.

Bring warm clothes for prior and post rowing especially during this recent cold spell.

Wear plenty of thin layers when in the boat.  Not thick absorbent coats.

Have a look at this page which includes some interesting videos of skills you ought to be able to master .... from British Rowing.
